Meaning & usage

noun
  1. a male given name, equivalent to English Conan

Where this word comes from

From Middle Welsh Cynan, from Old Welsh Cinan. Generally derived from Proto-Celtic *Kunagnos, from a diminutive form of Proto-Celtic *kū, *kunos (“dog”), but the expected reflex of this would be **Cynaen. It is likely that the Old Welsh form has been influenced by Old Irish Conán, also a diminutive of *kū.
