According to the Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru, imitative of a bird's call. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ping- (“small bird, sparrow”), the source of English finch, however the exception to the general Celtic loss of Proto-Indo-European *p would need special explanation.
