Where this word comes from

Identified by Koch as from Proto-Celtic *ɸriyants (“loving”), a participle that would serve as the exact Celtic counterpart to Proto-Germanic *frijōndz (“loved one”). Under this theory, see Proto-Indo-European *priHós for the base word. Derived by the GPC from a back-formation from the plural/collective rhieni (from rhy- (“before”) + geni (“birth”)) with the suffix -ant, -aint further added. The GPC seems to resort to this complicated derivation due to the late attestation of rhiant.
