Where this word comes from
From Middle Welsh talu, talaf, from Proto-Brythonic, from Proto-Celtic *tal-ī- (“to pay”), from Proto-Indo-European *teh₂-li-. Cognate with Cornish tyli, Latin tālis (“such”), Proto-Slavic *toliko (“this much”). An alternative theory considers the word (and its relatives, which are only found in Brythonic and not Goidelic) as a borrowing from Old Norse tal (“number, count”).
