Where this word comes from
From German Low German flasken, from Middle Low German vlaschen, of obscure origin: * possibly from a regional verb built from an older root meaning "flat" (compare Proto-Germanic *flataz): with a verb-forming suffix -sk- or -k-. According to this view, a prehistoric form *flat-ka could have yielded a verb meaning “to make flat, strike flatly,” evidenced by the Swedish dialect flaska slå med flata handen (“hit with the flat hand”). Over time, this may have generalized to “flatten out (problems)” or “go smoothly.” * or from a verb meaning "split" (compare Proto-West Germanic *flint), implying that the word grew out of a notion of things splitting off neatly.
