The neuter of the Old Norse pronoun hvár(r)gi (“either, neither”), from hvárr (“which (of two)”) + -gi (“no”). The first part goes back to Proto-Germanic *hwaþeraz (“which (of two)”), cognate with English whether, German weder (“neither”).
