A compound of Proto-Germanic *Tīwaz (“Tyr”) + *dagaz (“day”), a calque of Latin diēs Mārtis (literally “day of Mars”), which is itself a calque of Ancient Greek ἡμέρα Ἄρεως (hēméra Áreōs, literally “day of Ares”).
