18th century, from Italian broccoli, which see. The usual pronunciation with a long /oː/ is perhaps influenced by the French spelling brocoli, formerly also found in German texts. The sense of "marijuana" originated from a widely mocked quote said by the former German federal drug commissioner Daniela Ludwig at a press conferrence in 2020. : "Nur weil Alkohol gefährlich ist, unbestritten, ist Cannabis kein Brokkoli." Just because alcohol is undisputably dangerous doesn't mean that cannabis is broccoli.
