Where this word comes from
From Middle High German engerlinc, from Old High German engiring (10th c.), diminutive of angar ‘large larva’ (compare modern dialectal Anger, Inger), from Proto-Germanic *angaraz, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂engʷʰ-(o)r- (“little snake; eel”) (compare Lithuanian ungurỹs (“eel”), Proto-Slavic *ǫgořь (“eel”); with a different suffix, ánkštara, inksti̇̀ras (“pimple; tapeworm”), Albanian thnegël (“ant”), Ancient Greek ἔγχελυς (énkhelus, “eel”)). Compare also Unke, ultimately from the same Indo-European root, despite the different vocalism in the velar.
