From Middle High German verge, verje (alongside ver, vere), from Old High German fergo, ferio (alongside fero, ferro), from Proto-Germanic *farjô, agent noun of *farjaną. Related with Fähre, which see for more. The word had been widely obsolete by 1700, but was later revived in poetic language. It has since become very rare again, however.
