Coined by Waldemar Christofer Brøgger in 1894 from Ancient Greek κατώφορος (katṓphoros, “having a downward tendency”) and -ite. Brøgger (1894:37) wrote "Ich will hiermit für diese Reihe den Namen Katoforite vorschlagen (aus dem griechischen Worte κατώφορος = sich herab bewegend, mit Anspielung auf die Änderung der Lage der c-Achse zur Vertikalachse mit der Annäherung zum Arfvedsonit innerhalb dieser Reihe)."
