From northwestern Middle High German kirn, *kirne, from Proto-Germanic *kirnijǭ. Cognate with Dutch karn, English churn. The Middle High German word appears to be attested only in Bruder Hans (ca. 1400), who may have been a Low Franconian. However, its existence among the Zipser Saxons, who emigrated from the Rhineland before 1300, proves it as native. Compare modern Central Franconian Kier, Kiern, Kern. The alternative form Karn is from Low German.
