From Middle High German kunde, künde, from Old High German *kundī (attested in compounds). Abstract noun of the verb künden (“to tell, announce, declare”). The noun had all but died out in High German by the 16th century, but was then revived after Middle Low German kunde. Further cognate with Dutch kunde (also konde).
