Meaning & usage

noun/ʁiːt/
  1. reed

Where this word comes from

From Middle High German riet, from Old High German riot, hriot, from Proto-West Germanic *hreud (“reed”). Final -d instead of expected -t is due to West Central German influence (cf. Old High German ried, reid). The Low German variant Reet, in turn, has -t from generalized final devoicing, such that the dentals appear to have been “transposed” between both forms.
