Meaning & usage
synonym of Turm (“rook”)
Where this word comes from
From Middle High German roch, from Arabic رُخّ (ruḵḵ), from Middle Persian lhw'. The /x/ must be compared to the word Schach. In both of these cases it is either due to direct borrowing from Arabic (during the Crusades) or alternatively to borrowing via Middle Dutch roc, from Old French roc, with artificial application of the High German consonant shift.
