Meaning & usage
Eurasian bittern
Where this word comes from
From Middle High German rōrtumel, rōrtrumel, from Old High German *rōredumbil, the second element imitative of its mating call, and the first element from Rohr (“pipe, cane, reeds”). The name underwent extensive folk-etymological reshaping; compare Old High German horotumil, with horo (“mud, slime”), and Old English rāradumbla, whose first element was associated with rārian (“to roar, cry out”).
