Meaning & usage
banding together, formation of a flock or pack
a situation where several players confront the referee and/or each other in an aggressive, pressurizing or provoking way (called “mass confrontation” in English FIFA parlance)
Where this word comes from
From Rudel (“pack of animals, throng”) + Bildung (“formation”). First attested in 1838 in the context of animals. In 1965, attested as referring to a spontaneous grouping of people, but remaining uncommon, at least in print. Usage in football reporting starts in 2002, following public debate and stricter persecution of such mass confrontations in the 2002/2003 Bundesliga season.
