Meaning & usage
Germany
Where this word comes from
Clipping of Deutschland. First popularised during the 2006 World Cup by entertainer Stefan Raab and said to have been coined by him. Perhaps ultimately from a certain popular chant which involves a series of rhythmic claps followed by Deutschland! with strong stress on the second syllable. Compare also English Ingerland or American English 'Murica. It has previously occurred by itself in two artworks by Knut Kargel: "Kohl And The Gang" (dated 1988) and "Schland" (dated 1990). However, without attestations in the intervening years, it is unclear if the modern usage relates to this.
