Meaning & usage

noun/ˈʃmiːdə/
  1. forge, smithy (workshop of a smith)

    feminine
Where this word comes from

From Late Middle High German smide (15th c.), alteration of older smitte, from Old High German smitta (early also smiththa, seldom smidda), from Proto-West Germanic *smiþþjā, from Proto-Germanic *smiþjǭ. Cognate with Dutch smidse, English smithy. The modern form, which had displaced Schmitte by the 18th c., is an adaptation to the related verb schmieden (“to forge”). It is of Central German origin, likely influenced by Middle Low German, in which smēde was the prevalent form (already Old Saxon smitha, if this is not an inexact spelling).
