  1. synonym of Mörtel (“mortar, plaster”)

    Germany · Rhineland · Southwestern · colloquial · masculine · no-plural · strong
Where this word comes from

Short for Maurerspeise (literally “mason’s food”). Possibly conflated with Latin speciēs (“sort, kind”); compare Dutch specie (“mortar”). It is not clear, however, which of the two words developed the sense first. Dutch spijs, Middle Dutch spise are also attested in it. The shift to the masculine gender is found in the more southern dialects, perhaps after Mörtel m. In the Rhineland it remains feminine; compare the Luxembourgish below.
