Meaning & usage
chest (large box with a hinged lid)
Where this word comes from
From Middle High German truhe, from Old High German truha, with Verner alternation from the root of Trog (“trough”). The Old High German word may have been influenced semantically by the (originally unrelated) descendant of Proto-Germanic *þrūhs, whence Old English þrūh and dialectal English through (“coffin”). Chiefly restricted to Upper German dialects, Truhe spread northwards only during the 19th century, but has since displaced the northern equivalent Lade (itself now usually restricted to the sense “drawer”, but compare Bundeslade).
