Meaning & usage
sledgehammer
Where this word comes from
From vorschlagen (“to strike first”) + Hammer (“hammer”). It seems originally to have meant a smaller hammer used by the foreman to indicate the places where the other men must hit. The modern sense may be from confusion with (1.) Low German Vörhamer (Middle Low German vȫrehāmer, cf. English forehammer), meaning a heavy hammer used for the initial rough work, and (2.) Schlaghammer, also referring to certain heavier hammers.
