Meaning & usage
a city in Silesian Voivodeship, Poland
Where this word comes from
From Polish Zabrze. Although the town was Prussian from 1742, the spelling of its name was never Germanized (as happened e.g. with Katowice (German Kattowitz) and Świętochłowice (Schwientochlowitz)). In 1915 it was renamed to Hindenburg, however: a name it held until 1945.
