Meaning & usage
a native or inhabitant of any of the various places called Zell
Where this word comes from
From Zell + -er (demonym suffix).
a farmer whose land has been independent property since medieval times (therefore generally richer and formerly entitled to certain privileges)
Where this word comes from
From Middle Low German teller, tēler, derived from tēlen (“to cultivate”), from Proto-Germanic *tilōną (whence also Dutch telen). The Z- is an artifical adaptation to High German, at most loosely based on dialectal cognates. (The agricultural sense of the verb is found in Central Franconian and northern Hessian; cf. Luxembourgish zillen.) The proper High German form would be Zieler. For the modern Westphalian dialects, the Westfälisches Wörterbuch attests only the reborrowed form Sseller (semantically weakened to “farmer who owns at least two horses”), which shows that the term survived only in officialese parlance.
