foppen.
to put on, to tease, to hoax
Meaning & usage
to put on, to tease, to hoax
Where this word comes from
Uncertain, perhaps borrowed from Middle Dutch focken (“to breed; to fuck; to tease”) with uncommon sound development of [k] to [p] (influenced either by the preceding rounded vowel or assimilation to the /f/), from Old Dutch *fokkon, from Proto-West Germanic *fukkōn, possibly from Proto-Germanic *fukkōną (“to strike, copulate”). Compare modern Dutch fokken. However, note older Middle English foppe (“fool, fop”), of unclear relationship to the above. German foppen developed and spread in Rotwelsch (criminal’s jargon), originally meaning “to trick, deceive” (15th century).
