Formally continuing Middle High German verītelen (“to become weak, insipid”, a 14th-c. hapax). By surface analysis, eitel (“vain”) + ver- -en. In Early Modern German, it is attested for “to empty, deplete”. The contemporary sense has been in use since the 18th c. While it can easily be explained from the underlying adjective, it should be noted that the same sense was well established in Middle Dutch already by the 15th c., so influence by Dutch verijdelen is possible.
