Ultimately from Japanese 東(とう)京(きょう) (Tōkyō, literally “eastern capital”), from Middle Chinese 東 (tuwng, “east”) + 京 (kjaeng, “capital”). Likely borrowed from a Western language, such as German Tokio, English Tokyo, French Tokyo and/or Russian То́кио (Tókio). (If borrowed directly from Japanese it would have more likely been Tokjo. Compare: Kioto (“Kyoto”), Kjuŝuo (“Kyushu”), Pjongjango (“Pyongyang”), Mjanmao (“Myanmar”).)
