Spanish -ia Spanish Bolivia Named after Venezuelan military leader Simón Bolívar (1783–1830), from Bolív(ar) + -ia. Originally founded as the República de Bolívar on August 11, 1825, the nation was renamed to Bolivia on October 3, 1825. This change was proposed by the Potosí deputy Manuel Martín Cruz, who famously argued: Si de Rómulo, Roma; de Bolívar, Bolivia ― If from Romulus, Rome; from Bolívar, Bolivia. Cruz's analogy treated the ending -ar in Bolívar as the Spanish suffix -ar (derived from Latin -āris). Under the classical belief that the Romans coined Rōma by stripping the suffix -ulus from Rōmulus, he stripped the ending -ar from Bolívar to yield the root Boliv-. He then appended the standard country-forming suffix -ia to this root, coining the name Bolivia and avoiding the direct derivative *Bolivaria.
