Where this word comes from
Uncertain. Older attempts try to connect it to Latin dīrēctus (“direct; straight”), via borrowing from Catalan adret, a dretes or Old Occitan adreit, but phonological problems and in the case of Catalan, the word not being poorly attested, disprove this hypothesis. More likely, it is from Gothic 𐌰𐍄 (at, “at”) + *𐍂𐌴𐌳 (*rēd, “advice”), from Proto-Germanic *rēdaz, latinized as Vulgar Latin *atrēde, with possible influence from adedre. Cognate with Portuguese adrede, Galician adrede and Asturian arrede.
