Where this word comes from
According to Corominas and Pascual, probably from Andalusian Arabic al-mukáffir, from Arabic مُكَفِّر (mukaffir), active participle of Arabic كَفَّرَ (kaffara, “to cover, hide”), ultimately from the root ك ف ر (k f r). Less likely, RAE proposes Andalusian Arabic *abu káff, from Arabic أَبُو كف (“the one from the palm of the hand”); or according to TDHLE, from Arabic المحفر (almihfar, “excavator”), which is rejected by Corominas and Pascual on the basis of ⟨h⟩ yielding ⟨h⟩ or ⟨f⟩ (never a hard ⟨c⟩) intervocalically in Spanish.
