Where this word comes from

As a nautical term, it is borrowed from Middle French arrumer (which would become subsumed into French arrimer, which comes from a different route), from Middle Dutch ruum (“cargo hold”) (whence modern Dutch ruim (“cargo hold”)), from Old Dutch *rūm, Proto-West Germanic *rūm, from Proto-Germanic *rūmą (“room, open space”). Probably related to arrimar; see the entry for more information.
