azufre.
sulfur
Meaning & usage
sulfur
Where this word comes from
Inherited from Old Spanish sufre, from Latin sulfur, sulphur, sulphure, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *swelplos, from the root *swel- (“to burn, smoulder”). Compare modern French soufre. The 'a-' could have been added due to a false analysis of the phrase 'piedra sufre' and the 'z' is due to an Italic dialect pronunciation. Compare the Italian zolfo.
