Where this word comes from
Of uncertain origin. Some authors have proposed Gothic 𐌱𐌰𐌽𐌳𐍅𐌰 (bandwa, “sign”), however, this remains unclear: Corominas and Pascual have disputed a Germanic origin for this sense and for bando (“faction, flock”) on the basis of the late appearance of the term in French; they also dispute a Paleo-Hispanic origin due to the conservation of -d-, which cannot be explained. Doublet of bando (“faction; swarm”).
