Catalan secessionist
Meaning & usage
Catalan secessionist
Where this word comes from
Probably a blend of catalán (“Catalan”) + Catalan castellufo (“a speaker of Spanish”). The second element, castellufo, is a Catalan word made of castellufa, a derogatory name for the inhabitants of Es Castell because the town was originally founded as a Spanish military outpost; itself made of castellà (“a Spanish speaker”) and llufa (“a silent fart”), meaning that a term with the opposite meaning was created from it. Another possibility is that it is simply a blend of catalán (“Catalan”) + pitufo (“smurf”) for stereotypical reasons, comparing the Smurfs’ village to any typical Catalan village, the Smurfs’ caps to the barretina, and the stereotypical notion that Catalans are small-town folk. It could also simply come from catalufa because of their phonetic similarity.
