Meaning & usage
arrowroot
Where this word comes from
Ultimately from Latin vappa (“flat wine, worthless person”), probably through the intermediate of dialectal Old French, namely Picard vape, wape, gape (“dull, insipid (of food); weakened (of people); deranged (of the stomach)”), which has possibly, but not necessarily received influence from Proto-Germanic *hwapjaną (“to breathe, air out, let go to waste, become sour”), whereas modern French gouape is a reloan from Spanish. At one point the word meant “rascal, ruffian” and evolved in meaning over time.
