Meaning & usage

adj/as̻kar/[as̻.kar]/as̻kar/dialectal[as̻.kar]dialectal
  1. fast, quick

  2. strong

  3. intelligent, smart

Where this word comes from

Perhaps a compound of hazi (to "grow", "seed") + an hypothetical Proto-Basque *-hor (modern -kor). Giving azkor with an assimilation o > a (maybe same development as in hazkor) . The relation between the adjective and the tree name is not clear. It is possible that the tree was designated like that, because of its ability to grow fast. Thus the original meaning would have been maple, and later its qualities would have been used as adjectives (compare Latin robustus).
