Unclear. Perhaps from elur (“snow”) + auso (“blizzard”). Note that the second element could also be lauso (“steam, blurred”) from the same origin as auso. Still there are some difficulties, this word is only used in the north (see synonyms) while the second element lauso is mostly a Biscayan and Gipuzkoan form, the northern equivalent being lautsu or lausu. Moreover auso as a word with the meaning of blizzard is archaic and scarcely attested.
