Where this word comes from

Unknown. Euskal Hiztegi Historiko-Etimologikoa (EHHE) notes the nasality of "u" in the Roncalese dialect and presents a few hypotheses: * One possible reconstruction, assuming that the Roncalese nasal is a trace of the two-syllable structure, is Proto-Basque *hunur, with the intermediate steps *hũh̃ũr > *ũh̃ũr > ũr. * The second reconstruction is Proto-Basque *nunur, with the intermediate steps *unur > *ũh̃ũr > ũr. In this scenario, the reconstructed term would be a result of reduplication of the Proto-Basque root *nur. This reconstruction is analogous to EHHE's proposed etymology of har (“worm”) – *nar reduplicated to *nanar > *anar. * Alternatively, a single-syllable reconstruction would be Proto-Basque *hun, analogously to zur < *zun. This, however, encounters two issues. The first one is the discrepancy in the quality of rhotic, as evidenced by definite forms: compare hurra vs. zura. The second one is the lack of the expected variance of *hun /hur as the first component in compounds, contrary to *zun /zur.
