Meaning & usage

name/ˈɑhʋenɑnˌmɑː/[ˈɑ̝xʋe̞nɑ̝mˌmɑ̝ː]
  1. Aland, Åland (archipelago and autonomous province of Finland located southwest of the Finnish mainland)

Where this word comes from

Unclear. First attested as Ahwenan maan (genitive) in 1648. One theory derives the name from Proto-Norse *ᚨᚺᚹᚢᛚᚨᛞᚨ (*ahwulada), the first part of which the Finnic peoples would have associated with ahven (“perch”). According to the same theory the Swedish name of the islands, Åland, would come from the same origin. Another theory, proposed by Schalin (2008), is that the word was originally borrowed from early Proto-Germanic *agwiōz (“archipelago”) into Proto-Finnic as *ahvëh or *ahvë- and then re-borrowed back into Proto-Norse as [script needed] (ahwē) or [script needed] (ahwe), which would later become *ā- in Old Swedish *āland > Swedish Åland.
