From Northern Sami Áile (formerly also spelled Aili) first recorded in Lapland in the 17th century, also in the diminutive form Ailitza. Taken up by Finnish speakers at the end of the 19th century. Possibly ultimately an equivalent of English Helga or Alice, or of Norwegian Eili.
