From aino, a poetic variant of ainoa (“only, sole”), also in the sense “unique”. The name was coined by Finnish physician and philologist Elias Lönnrot, the editor of the Kalevala, for its second edition (1849) by capitalizing the aino in phrases like aino tytti (“the only girl”) of the first edition (1835). It began to gain popularity as a given name a decade or two later.
