Meaning & usage

name/ˈɑu̯nus/[ˈɑ̝u̯nus̠]
  1. Olonets (town in NW Russia, the oldest documented settlement in Karelia)

Where this word comes from

Unknown. Cognate with Livvi Anus. Some old attestations suggest may have originally been closer to *Agnis or *Agnus: Agnismaa (1587), Agnesma (1612), Augnisma (1657), but also compare Auniszmaa (1590). Theories include: * Possibly from a lost anthroponym. * Some older forms seem to support an original -l- (e.g. Алоньсь (Alonĭsĭ)), in which case the name may be from an earlier form like *alanus (meaning something like “lowland”, seemingly supported by the topography of Olonets), perhaps from Veps which is known for l-vocalization (l > u) after some vowels. * A connection with Ounasjoki (and thus a possible Sami origin) has also been proposed. * Yet another Sami origin proposed is from a form like *oalōnčē (*ōlōnčē), derived from *oalē, in this case originally a name for the river. * As usual with such names, a substrate origin is also possible.
