Medieval form of Middle Low German Enewald, a saint with a local cult in southern Finland; from Old High German Aginwald, from Proto-Germanic *agjǭ (“edge, point (of a weapon)”) + *waldą (“rule”), “one who rules by the sword”. Revived in the 19th century (perhaps by Yrjö Sakari Yrjö-Koskinen) and later also used as a short form of Einari.
