Meaning & usage

name/ˈespoː/[ˈe̞s̠po̞ː]
  1. Espoo (a city and municipality of Uusimaa, Finland, just west of Helsinki)

Where this word comes from

Borrowed from Swedish Esbo (first attested as Espa in 1431). Perhaps originally given to a river (Espoonjoki) passing by the village that the city is then named after. Possibly from a compound of äspe (“aspen grove”) + å (“river”). Lars Huldén has presented an alternative etymology for the initial element, deriving it from a diminutive of the given name Esbjörn.
