Meaning & usage
Hanko (a port town and municipality of Uusimaa, on the southern coast of Finland)
Where this word comes from
The Finnish name may be shortened from Hankoniemi (the name of a nearby strait) or adapted from the Swedish form Hangö, probably ultimately from a Finnish name Hanka, Hankala, derived from hanka. The ö (“island”) in the Swedish name is probably by folk etymology. The name of the strait is attested as Hangethe in c. 1250.
