Where this word comes from
From dialectal hiiti/hiitti + -inen, derived from hiisi (“sacred site”). Probably originally a name for the island of the same name that is one of the two major islands within this municipality. The site of a former chapel on the nearby island of Kyrkkö likely previously was a sacred pagan site.
