Where this word comes from
huopa- + lahti (“bay”). Originally a Tavastian name *Haapalaksi (from haapa (“aspen”) + laksi, the original form of lahti (“bay”)). This name was borrowed into Swedish *Håplax (with the standard Swedish vowel shift /aː/ → /oː/). This form and the current Swedish form Hoplax (/-uː-/, through spelling pronunciation) have then been reborrowed back into Finnish. While the latter component was correctly recognized as lahti, the initial one was mistakenly - or rather folk-etymologically - interpreted as huopa (“felt”).
