Meaning & usage
a town and municipality of Northern Savonia, Finland
Where this word comes from
ii- + salmi (“strait, sound”), from older *Idensalmi, *Iidensalmi. Possibly ultimately from the Sami word for “night” (Proto-Samic *ijë), either as the name for a place to stay the night, or in reference to a strait or sound perhaps between bodies of water with Ii- in their names. The exact origin is however unknown.
