Where this word comes from
A medieval name revived in 1936, prior to which the municipality had been called Uusikirkko. Multiple theories exist: (a) possibly from a pseudo-Swedish (Kaland) or pseudo-Latin (Kalandia, Calandia) of a derivative of kala, perhaps kalainen (“with plenty of fish”); (b) possibly from a Low German place name Kalant (found in 13th century documents from Mecklenburg); (c) according to Heikkilä (2012), from an original *Kalendek (back-formed root *Kale- from Kaleva with -nne) and reborrowed through Swedish, where *Kalend > Kaland by association with land.
