a Finnish surname
Where this word comes from
This has its origins in the region of Pohjois-Savo. Probably from a byname Kapa, from kapa (e.g. kapakala (“stockfish”)), referring to a 'hard' or 'tough' character. The original form of the surname appears to have been a longer Kapajakonen, in which kapa may have been affixed to Jakonen. Probably also from Karelian vernacular forms (e.g. Kapa) of Russian Капитон (Kapiton). in both cases with + -nen.
